31st over: South Africa 167-5 (van der Dussen 50, Phehlukwayo 14)
Just before that review, van der Dussen cut Rashid for a single to reach a calm fifty from 56 balls. He now has an average of over 100 in his fledgling ODI career.
“I’m in Stratford Upon Avon, which got me thinking about parallels between cricketers and Shakespeare’s character,” says Gary Naylor. “Can’t help but see Eoin Morgan as Henry V - a heroic leader, rallying the troops on his way to his personal Agincourt against India at Lord’s on 14 July. Unfortunately, I think, like Henry V himself, soon after his success he will leave the scene and chaos will reign in the land, as the twin crowns of The Hundred and first-class cricket sit uneasily on the head of the Chair of the ECB. Still, let’s enjoy this fine band of brothers while we can.”

Andile Phehlukwayo survives an LBW review. He played back to a Rashid googly, missed and was hit on the back foot. It looked plumb, but Kumar Dharmasena gave it not out and replays showed it pitched just outside leg stump. That’s a fine piece of umpiring.
30th over: South Africa 166-5 (van der Dussen 49, Phehlukwayo 14)
Phehlukwayo looks in rumbustious mood. He charges Moeen’s first ball and drags it over mid-on for four. Then van der Dussen, who has played with a lot of class, cuts another boundary through the covers. Moeen ends with figures of 10-0-62-1.
29th over: South Africa 156-5 (van der Dussen 44, Phehlukwayo 9)
Adil Rashid replaces Liam Plunkett, whose dismissal of Quinton de Kock feels like the decisive moment of this game. Phehlukwayo, on the charge, scuds a boundary between extra cover and mid off; the next ball is a delicious googly that beats the outside edge. Sooper cricket.
28th over: South Africa 150-5 (van der Dussen 43, Phehlukwayo 4)
The dismissal of JP Duminy halved Moeen Ali’s ODI bowling average in 2019. It was 407 before that wicket; now, after his ninth over goes for four runs, it’s a healthy 205.50.
27th over: South Africa 146-5 (van der Dussen 42, Phehlukwayo 1)
One thing for which this England team deserve more credit is their ability to keep their nerve in the field when they are defending a target. It helps that their captain is a model of equilibrium. South Africa need 166 from 23 overs.
WICKET! South Africa 144-5 (Pretorius run out 1)
South Africa, so much to answer for. They have lost three wickets for 15 now, with Dwaine Pretorious run out at the non-striker’s end as he came back for a dodgy second. Eoin Morgan did well to collect the throw from the deep in front of the stumps and break the stumps in one movement.
26th over: South Africa 142-4 (van der Dussen 40, Pretorius 0)
Still no Amla - the new batsman is Dwaine Pretorius. Meanwhile, this is a good spot from Tim de Lisle. And no surprise to see Morgan demonstrating his talk:walk ratio; only Rohit Sharma has hit more sixes in ODIs since the last World Cup.
For one ball only, the World Cup comes to the village green. JP Duminy drives Moeen Ali elegantly, classily... and straight into the hands of Ben Stokes at long off. That’s a really ill-conceived stroke.
